A Greener Blue World
A Greener Blue World
Studies coordinated by NASA have shown that since the early
2000’s the world has become 5% more greener. They have used Moderate Resolution
Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) to detect these changes over the last 20
years.
NASA have discovered that “There are now more than two million
square miles of extra green leaf area per year, compared to the early 2000s,”
leading to the 5% increase of vegetation cover on our planet. According to
these studies China and India are the frontrunners for the global increase in
the ‘greening’ of the planet.
China, in particular, have started developing their “Forest Cities” with the Liuzhou, city in the Guangxi Province being currently under
construction. These urban developments are meant to soak up 10,000 tonnes of
carbon dioxide a year, which is a remarkable feat and is revolutionary in the
way we look at urban architecture.

We’ve
also seen environmental efforts from individuals such as Jadav Payeng (India)
who has grown an entire forest by himself, spending the last 30 years of his life
planting trees. He has named this forest the Molai Forest and is estimated to be
larger than Central Park, covering 550 acres. The forest is now home to a surplus
of species such as Bengal tigers, rabbits, monkeys and several thousand trees.

So, what does this mean for us?
This increase in vegetation cover doesn’t do much for us as NASA points out that the increase of greening doesn’t counterbalance the damage caused by the current loss in vegetation. However, this a positive step in the right direction and shows a willingness for human beings to change. Retrospectively, the rest of the world should look at China and India as a positive example of the things that human beings can do and change. We have the ability to change and the world needs us to.
